Karnataka: Woven in Memories

Happy Rajyotsava Day to my Paati’s (grandma’s) home state, Karnataka!  My Paati was born and brought up in Bangalore. Growing up, I loved listening to her stories of old Bangalore, its tree-lined streets, bustling markets, and a way of life that was perhaps simpler and slower. Thanks to her, my home is filled with heirloom handicrafts from Karnataka, each carrying a little piece of its rich heritage.

In a Kodiyala handloom saree woven in mulberry silk. Kodiyala is a weaving cluster near Srirangapatna, in Mandya district of Karnataka. Weaving is deeply woven into the fabric of everyday life here, with almost every household engaged in one form of weaving or another. While powerlooms have gradually taken over, the tradition of handloom weaving continues to survive. A little piece of Karnataka, wrapped in six yards of heritage.
